Chaparral to re-open this week with new owners

                                              By Janet DelTufo, Assistant Editor

Pam and Tony Rovida at the Chaparral

Just in time for the Labor Day weekend and Fiesta Septiembre, Chaparral restaurant and ice cream shop will re-open for business this week.

Closed since early August, Chaparral will open back up to the public under the new ownership of Pam and Tony Rovida.

The Rovidas, who now call Wickenburg home, most recently lived in Chino, Calif. However, they had been watching Wickenburg for about three years and were just waiting for the right business opportunity to present itself.

The Rovidas began negotiations when Chaparral went up for sale, and they are anxious to start meeting and serving the community.

“We are cleaning the entire restaurant, we are sprucing things up and we are bringing the charm back to this restaurant,” said Pam Rovida. “We want Chaparral to be a place where families can come to eat, to feel safe and to have a good time.”

The Rovidas are creating a new feel to the restaurant and a new menu. They would like Chaparral to have an old pharmacy and soda shop look, and they are keeping the stage intact for future use.

Employees will wear black and white clothing as well as aprons. The restaurant will also be available for birthday parties.

The new menu naturally includes homemade ice cream -- a feature Chaparral has become known for -- and will also include banana splits, shakes, malts and ice cream floats. Chaparral will also serve what Rovida called “A brownie to knock your socks off.”

Other beverage items available will include lemonade, old fashioned bottled sodas, hot chocolate with real milk and cream, coffee, and tea.

Food items will include potato salad, macaroni salad, tomato and basil salad, green salad, a blue cheese sauce, and a cheddar cheese sauce, cold sandwiches (including freshly ground peanut butter and any-choice-topping sandwiches), cheese steak sandwiches, and thick crust pizza.

“Everything here will be made fresh,” Rovida said. “It is going to feel a lot different here than it has in the past, and we are very anxious to get the restaurant back opened to the public. People come by every day wanting to buy some ice cream, and we want to serve it to them.”

Chaparral will be open Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. It will be open Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
